6 Cubs Born To Royal Bengal Tigress Aditi In Delhi Zoo; Largest Litter In 20 Years!

Six tiger cubs were born to a Bengal tigress, Aditi, in the Delhi Zoo on Monday. This is the largest litter born at the zoo in two decades! These cubs will help strengthen the zoo’s ongoing breeding efforts for Bengal tigers. The authorities at the zoo are closely monitoring the health of both the mother and her cubs.

Delhi Zoo Welcomes Six Tiger Cubs

Delhi Zoo has been seeing success in its breeding efforts to increase the number of Bengal tigers. On Monday, a 7-year-old tigress gave birth to six cubs. According to a report by Hindustan Times, this is the largest litter the zoo has seen in 20 years. The cubs were born to tigress Aditi and a white tiger named Vijay.

Delhi Zoo director Sanjeet Kumar told HT that the zoo will be monitoring the mother and her newborn cubs through 24×7 CCTV surveillance. He also mentioned that the first 48 hours are crucial for the survival of any litter. It was Aditi’s first litter, and she gave birth to the cubs between 9 am and 11 am on Monday.

Tigress Aditi Was Brought From Nagpur

As per the same report, Aditi is of wild origin and was acquired from the Gorewada Rescue Centre in Nagpur by zoo authorities. She is currently taking care of her cubs, while officials are keeping a close watch on the health of both mother and babies.

Reportedly, before this litter, the Delhi Zoo had six white tigers and seven Bengal tigers. In 2023, another tigress named Siddhi, also acquired from Gorewada, gave birth to five cubs, only two of which survived. Back in 2005, a litter of six was also delivered, but even then, only two survived. That’s why zoo officials are being extra cautious with the new litter. Veterinary officer Abhijit Bhawal shared with NDTV that the zoo had been trying to breed Aditi since 2023. After the initial failed attempts, they finally got positive results on May 26, when her pregnancy was confirmed by the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI).

This new litter can significantly help increase the Bengal tiger population at Delhi Zoo and support their conservation efforts. We hope both the mother and her mighty cubs remain healthy.
