Delhi Metro has been one of the busiest and most-relied-upon public transport systems in the capital since its launch. It has been carrying millions of passengers every day, and their safety is the top priority. However, keeping the recent delays and technical issues in mind, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will start ultrasonic testing of rail welds. Keep reading to know more details.

For over few months, commuters travelling in the Delhi Metro have been experiencing several delays and technical glitches. Now, to solve this, the authorities are beginning ultrasonic testing of rail welds. But what is it? It’s a modern technique that helps detect hidden defects in train tracks. It aims to keep the metro system safe and reliable for all passengers.

According to Business Standard, the tender for this work has already been issued on October 7, 2025. It invites agencies to carry out Ultrasonic Flaw Detection (USFD) testing of Alumino-Thermic (AT) welds and rails using advanced B-scan machines. The project will cost about ₹1.89 crore and will be completed in about three years. We appreciate the authorities’ efforts to reduce glitches, as it will ensure smoother, safer journeys for passengers across the network.

Where Will The Ultrasonic Testing Be Carried Out?

The test will cover six metro lines, including the Airport Express Line. The oldest Blue Line routes, Lines 3 and 4, which run from Noida to Dwarka and from Yamuna Bank to Vaishali, which faced technical issues in September, will undergo inspection. Other lines included in the inspection programme are the Violet Line (Line 6) from Kashmere Gate to Raja Nahar Singh, the Magenta Line (Line 8) from Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden, the Grey Line (Line 9) from Dwarka to Dhansa Bus Stand, and the Airport Express Line.

Till now, the metro has faced several technical issues, including its third snag in a week on September 1, which affected the Yellow and Blue Lines. Signalling faults between Barakhamba and Indraprastha stations, and another near Millennium City Centre in Gurugram, slowed train services and required manual operation. Earlier, the Blue Line experienced delays on May 21, and the Red Line faced disruptions on August 24.

We hope this testing will help the DMRC overcome these issues and maintain the smooth functioning of the city’s metro system.
