Travelling in Delhi often means dealing with heavy traffic jams, but that could change soon. The Union Cabinet has approved a major road infrastructure project, a new six-lane tunnel corridor that will connect west and south Delhi. Read on to know more!
Delhi To Soon Have Six-Lane Tunnel Corridor
In Delhi, the government has gave an approval to 8.1-km six-lane tunnel corridor. As per News18, this new corridor is planned to connect Dwarka Expressway (NH-248BB) with Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning this project with an estimate cost of ₹6,969.67 crore. The project will be built under the Hybrid Annuity Mode as part of the National Highways scheme and is expected to be completed within five years.
One of the highlights of this project is a 3.14-km twin-tube tunnel. It will pass beneath the Rangpuri or Southern Delhi Ridge. As per News18, NHAI will use Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology to build the tunnel underground. This method will play a crucial role in minimisng disruption to the environmentally sensitive Ridge area. Nearly 1.98 km of the tunnel will be beneath the forest region.

What Are The Other Additional Infrastructure Ugrades?
The project also includes a few extra upgrades to make travelling easier. News18 reported that a 1.8-km elevated road will come up along Nelson Mandela Marg, and a new flyover will help vehicles move smoothly from Chhatarpur towards Mahipalpur. An elevated U-turn will also be added to reduce traffic jams. NHAI is also planning an elevated corridor between AIIMS and Mahipalpur. This corridor will connect the new tunnel with the Barapullah Elevated Road.
The corridor will provide a high-speed and signal-free connection between the Dwarka Expressway, Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and Vasant Kunj. The project will also make journeys to Gurugram, Dwarka and Indira Gandhi International Airport easier for people travelling from south and east Delhi.
The Cabinet has also given a green signal to a new 117.7-km four-lane highway between Kanpur and Kabrai in Uttar Pradesh. Built at a cost of ₹7,145.14 crore, the road aims to make travel faster and boost connectivity under the PM GatiShakti plan.
