Kerala Railway Stations To Get KFC & Other Popular Food Chain
As per various reports, the Kerala authorities is expected to initiate dedicated food streets and ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ projects at select stations. As part of its plan to boost non-fare revenue, brands such as KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Wow! Momo and Baskin-Robbins are all set to open outlets at seven railway stations.

Kozhikode is among the stations chosen for the initiative. In addition to welcoming leading food brands, the station is set to get a dedicated food street, a food truck service and a rail coach restaurant.
The food street is expected to be developed near Mele Palayam within the next three months on a 1,291 sq ft plot close to the station. A food truck operating within the station premises will also serve food and beverages to passengers and visitors.
The rail coach restaurant at Kozhikode will be modelled on the successful ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ at Chennai Egmore railway station. The project will transform a retired railway coach into an air-conditioned restaurant featuring a dining area, kitchen, seating space and parking. Spread across nearly 6,000 sq ft, the facility aims to offer passengers a unique dining experience. Construction is expected to begin by the end of August. The ₹40 lakh project has been awarded to Erode-based Jesi’s Food Court Company.
Kerala’s First Rail Coach Nears Completion
Meanwhile, Kerala’s first rail coach restaurant at Payyanur is nearing completion. The ₹40 lakh project is being developed in partnership with four young entrepreneurs who have collaborated with the Railways to bring the concept to life.
Similar ‘Restaurant on Wheels’ projects are also planned for Kannur, Palakkad Town, Mattancherry and Nagercoil railway stations.

The Railways has identified five retired coaches, including both AC and sleeper coaches, for conversion into rail coach restaurants. These coaches became available after the widespread introduction of LHB coaches, which led to the phase-out of older coaches from regular service. Instead of being scrapped, they are now being repurposed as part of the Railways’ station redevelopment and passenger amenity initiatives.
