According to The Times of India, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has fired over 15 senior officials for taking security restricted articles (SRA) for personal use. The incident happened last month, and the airport management asked these officials to resign for pocketing SRA items, even though these goods were marked for disposal.

These officials resigned on August 1, 2025. Reportedly, the airport’s HR department had gathered information, including CCTV footage from previous months, as evidence. In the footage evidence, the officials could be seen taking SRA items.

While the Mumbai Airport hasn’t commented on this matter, one of the officials who was asked to resign spoke to TOI on this matter. He said that usually these items are thrown away or given to NGOs, and the senior officials didn’t think much about taking these items away. According to him, for the airport authorities, these goods are usually a nuisance and not something they bother about. Interestingly, among those fired, many of them have worked for the Mumbai Airport for around a decade or two, and were holding posts like senior duty terminal officers, duty terminal manager, deputy manager and senior executive.

What Are SRA Items?

If you’re wondering what SRA items are, they are essentially goods banned from being carried in cabin baggage. During pre-departure security checks, CISF officials confiscate such items. They then send these items to the MIAL terminal operations department, Times of India reported. Furthermore, after every 12-hour shift, the officials have to make a register entry of the confiscated SRA goods. The list includes everyday objects like coconuts, oil bottles, knives, batteries, toys, cello tape, chillies, lighters, e-cigarettes, and more.
