Bengalureans, you can now shop for some GI-tagged products! Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently unveiled Kalaloka, a new retail space at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. The store will sell the state’s Geographical Indication (GI) certified products to travellers from India and across the world. Here’s what you can shop for!
Kalaloka, Your Destination To Shop For GI-Tagged Products, Now Open At Bengaluru Airport
ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡ ಅಂತಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ವಿಮಾನ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನಗಳ ಮಾರಾಟ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾದ “ಕಲಾಲೋಕ ಮಳಿಗೆ”ಯನ್ನು ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ @siddaramaiah ಅವರು ಉದ್ಘಾಟಿಸಿ, ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು.

Before diving into the details, let’s first understand what GI-tagged products are. A GI or Geographical Indication tag signifies that a product has unique qualities and enjoys a rich cultural heritage. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the newly opened Kalaloka store at Kempegowda International Airport’s Terminal 2 lets travellers indulge in retail therapy with items that represent Karnataka’s culture and heritage.
Here’s what the products are:
- Mysore Sandal Soap: Mysore Sandal Soap, one of Karnataka’s most famous GI-tagged products, uses Mysore sandalwood oil as its main ingredient. This soap is known for its high quality and unique fragrance.
- Channapatna Toys: These handcrafted wooden toys are known for their glossy finish created using non-toxic vegetable dyes. They are eco-friendly, durable, and beautifully designed.
- Mysore Silk: Known for its royal heritage and luxurious texture, Mysore Silk is another GI-tagged product now available at Kalaloka.
- Ilkal Sarees: These sarees are known for their distinctive weaving technique. These sarees are also famous for their intricate border designs.
- Bidriware: A unique handicraft that involves intricate metal inlay work, where silver and gold are inlaid into a blackened alloy of zinc and copper.
- Lambani Embroidery: Famous for its vibrant colours, geometric patterns, and mirror work, this embroidery type is quite special for Karnataka.
- GI-Tagged Coffee: Kalaloka store will also sell Karnataka’s famous GI-tagged coffee varieties.
The official X account of the Chief Minister of Karnataka also shared the news. They wrote, “The store has been established with the aim of reaching Karnataka’s pride-worthy traditional and GI-tagged unique products to customers from the country and abroad. This is a moment of joy on the industrial map of Karnataka.”

An Initiative To Highlight Karnataka’s Heritage
As per a report by Hindustan Times, the store is an initiative of the Department of Industries, designed to highlight Karnataka’s rich craftsmanship and heritage. Industries Minister MB Patil, ITBT Minister Priyank Kharge, and several other senior officials were also present at the event.
The store has reportedly been developed in collaboration with several state-run enterprises, including Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd, Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation, KSIC, LIDKAR, and the Coffee Board. Moreover, the store’s interiors draw inspiration from Karnataka’s rich heritage, adding to its beauty.
