Industrialist Anand Mahindra took to his X handle to highlight how Daman has changed over the years. Talking about the transformation of this tourist destination, he wrote, “Daman’s reads like a movie script.” He recalled that Daman became known for cheap, duty-free alcohol after it was freed from Portuguese rule. Its location also played a role. Daman is close to Gujarat, where alcohol is banned, and Maharashtra, where liquor taxes are high.
Earlier, customs officials would carefully check the cars of his friends and family when they returned from Daman. These memories from his younger days show how strongly Daman was once associated with liquor and bootlegging.
