Hyderabad is getting ready for Ganesh Chaturthi, and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) wants the festival to look more sustainable this year. To promote a greener festival vibe, HMDA will distribute eco-friendly clay Ganesh idols in Hyderabad across 34 locations in the city.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: Eco-Friendly Ganesh Idols To Be Distributed In Hyderabad
According to The Hindu, starting August 24, the civic body will hand out one lakh clay Ganesh idols, each just eight inches tall, at 34 different points across the city. The idea is simple: give people an easy alternative to plaster of Paris idols that clog lakes and poison water once the immersion begins.
HMDA has been quietly doing this since 2017, but the scale this year is bigger, with both fixed counters and vans moving into IT corridors, gated communities, and residential colonies.
On the first day, idols will pop up at familiar city spots like Tank Bund, NTR Gardens, Jubilee Hills, Mehdipatnam Rythu Bazaar and others. Over the next two days, the distribution spreads out to the following locations:
- Banjara Hills
- Begumpet
- Saroornagar
- Madhapur
- Vanasthalipuram
- Narayanaguda
- Tarnaka
- Peddamma Temple
- Yellamma Temple
By August 26, HMDA plans to cover almost every major cluster, with Secunderabad’s Ganesh Temple and Safilguda Park wrapping up the drive.

Sustainable Ganpati In The Making
The Ganesh idols, all set to be distributed across Hyderabad are small, unpainted, and made entirely of natural clay. They dissolve quickly in water. This feature provides an intentional contrast to the bright PoP idols that take years to break down and leave lakes foaming with chemicals, as stated by The Hindu.
An HDMA official iterated that their focus is to make eco-friendly choices accessible. He further added that if they bring the idols to people’s doorsteps, the switch becomes easier. In a city where Ganesh Chaturthi installations range from tiny home altars to massive public pandals, this free distribution is both symbolic and heartwarming.
Ganesh Chaturthi begins on September 7 this year, but the groundwork is already being laid, with one lakh lumps of humble clay, waiting to take shape as the city’s most beloved deity, Ganesh and being distributed across the city of Hyderabad.
