Goa Police Announces New Rule: No Photos Or Selfies Without Tourist Consent

In response, the state police have tightened rules to protect tourists’ privacy, especially women. Anyone taking photos or selfies without consent can face action. Scroll down to know more!

Goa Police Tighten Selfie Rules

Now, if someone is caught taking photos or videos of tourists without their permission, the police can detain them for up to 24 hours. As per Financial Express, this action is taken to ensure people’s privacy or to prevent women from being harassed. A senior officer said that some recent viral videos showed visitors pressuring foreign women into selfies on beaches. The police are using Section 170 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which lets them detain people without a warrant in certain cases.

Police are now keeping a closer watch on North Goa beaches after several incidents that could give the state a bad reputation among tourists. Officials said this kind of behaviour makes Goa look bad and needs to be stopped with strict action.

The crackdown comes after specific incidents triggered public outrage. On Friday, two male tourists from Tamil Nadu were detained at Baga beach for allegedly taking photos of tourists without consent and harassing them. Earlier, an FIR was filed against a man named Alisto Lobo for filming a woman swimming at Calangute beach and sharing the video online without her permission. He was held under provisions related to outraging a woman’s modesty and defamation.

Harassment Video Goes Viral

A viral video that sparked outrage shows an Indian man approaching foreign women on a public beach without consent. He tries to click photos and record videos, even holding a woman’s hand. He also urged her to spin for the camera. The women look uncomfortable, but the man continues filming, treating it as content for social media. The video drew sharp criticism online, with users calling the behaviour invasive and disrespectful.

The incident has raised serious questions about tourist safety in public spaces. Many netizens said such behaviour damages India’s global image and discourages international visitors.
