The much-anticipated Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train has achieved another major milestone with the breakthrough of a high-speed mountain tunnel in Palghar, Maharashtra. This latest development marks a significant step forward for India’s first bullet train project, which is expected to become operational in 2027. Here is everything you need to know about this new development.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Achieves Tunnel Breakthrough
According to a report by The Economic Times, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made the announcement during a press conference on Friday. India’s first bullet train project has crossed many milestones, and the latest achievement is the breakthrough of Mountain Tunnel-5 in Maharashtra’s Palghar district.
Reportedly, the total length of the project spans 508 kilometres. Tunnels account for 27.4 kilometres of this stretch, with 21 kilometres underground and 6.4 kilometres built as surface tunnels. The project includes eight tunnels in total. Seven of these are in Maharashtra, spanning 6.05 kilometres, while one tunnel of 359 metres is located in Gujarat.

India’s First Bullet Train Project Will Have 12 Stations
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the first underground tunnel, measuring nearly five kilometres, runs between Thane and BKC. It was completed in September 2025. The second tunnel, TM5c, measures 1.48 kilometres and is located in Palghar district. MT5 is the first and longest tunnel of the project.
Other announcements were also made. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project will have a total of 12 stations. Sabarmati will serve as the terminal station in Gujarat, while BKC will be the terminal station in Mumbai. Three depots are also being constructed for the project.
The bullet train corridor will connect major cities, including Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane and Mumbai. Once operational, the bullet train will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to just two hours. The bullet train project was originally scheduled for completion in December 2023, but after several delays, it will now be operational in August 2027.
