Guwahati: False Ceiling Collapses In PVR Cinema During Film Screening; 3 Injured

Chaos erupted inside the PVR Cinema hall at City Centre Mall in Assam’s Guwahati on Sunday when a part of the false ceiling collapsed during a film screening. Reports suggest that three moviegoers, including children, were injured in the incident.

False Ceiling Collapses During Film Screening At PVR Cinema, Guwahati

According to NDTV, on August 3, a portion of a false ceiling inside a PVR cinema hall in Guwahati collapsed during the screening of the movie ‘Mahavatar Narsimha’. Panic erupted when the overhead structure suddenly gave way, and debris was strewn all over.

Visuals circulating on social media show broken pieces of the false ceiling and glass all over the cinema hall’s floor. Moviegoers can be seen standing near the aisle, panicked and aghast. The theatre staff soon evacuated the people from the theatre. As per the latest report, the venue has now been shut for inspection. Authorities have launched an investigation to assess the safety provisions of the theatre and to determine the reason for the structural failure.

3 Injured In The Ordeal

The false ceiling fell around 7 PM on Sunday inside a PVR Cinema hall at City Centre Mall in Guwahati. Three people, including children, were injured during the incident. After evacuating the hall, the injured individuals were provided with first aid and taken to the nearby hospital. According to eyewitnesses, the sudden thud of the structure falling led to panic and many moviegoers even ran outside the hall, stirring panic.

The mall is located in Dispur, near Christian Basti. Media reports suggest that an unfortunate incident occurred at the mall about ten years ago, when its screen was damaged due to a short circuit.

PVR Cinemas and the mall management are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
