This is big for metro commuters in Hyderabad! Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMR) has completed a feasibility study for introducing a Personal Rapid Transit System (PRTS) to improve last-mile connectivity for commuters and ease congestion. Here’s what it means and how it can help.

Hyderabad Metro Plans PRTS For Commuters

According to The Hindu, the Personal Rapid Transit System (PRTS) is expected to help commuters and promote sustainable urban mobility in Hyderabad. The authorities recently completed a techno-economic feasibility study, and the project is still in its very initial stages. PRTS will be reliable, comfortable and environmentally friendly. Metro commuters will be able to benefit from it and travel seamlessly between metro stations and their destinations.

Moreover, the system is also expected to increase metro ridership and significantly reduce dependence on private vehicles and public transport. This, in turn, will ease congestion on the roads, especially in rapidly expanding areas. The project will move forward through a public-private partnership (PPP).

Project Still In Its Initial Stages

B.M. Setty of consultant LEA Associates shared with The Hindu how PRTS compares with other public transport systems. He also outlined two priority study areas. The first covers the Raidurg-Kukatpally corridor, including Raidurg and HITEC City metro stations, as well as the Financial District. The second study covers the Secretariat, Hussainsagar, Begumpet, the Assembly area and Secunderabad West Metro station.

The study also discussed the proposed PRTS network, estimated ridership, potential depot locations and the challenges of making the project successful. Yes, the project is still in its early stages, but if everything goes as planned, PRTS can definitely change how people use the metro in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad Metro carries thousands of commuters across the city every day. Because so many people use it, trains and stations get crowded, especially during morning and evening hours. We hope this system helps resolve that issue.
