India Issues Travel Advisory For Nationals In Mexico Following Unrest

Fresh violence in parts of Mexico has prompted India, the United States and Canada to issue urgent travel advisories for their citizens. The warnings come after the killing of one of Mexico’s most feared drug lords triggered unrest, road blockades and arson attacks across several states.

Indian Embassy Issues Urgent Advisory For Travellers In Mexico

Violence broke out after Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, the powerful founder of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed during a Mexican military operation. According to CNBC TV18, the 60-year-old cartel leader died after being injured in a raid in Tapalpa, in Jalisco state, on Sunday, February 22.

Soon after news of his death spread, cartel members reportedly retaliated. Armed groups set vehicles on fire, blocked highways and torched businesses in multiple areas. Major roads were shut down with burning trucks and cars, bringing traffic to a standstill. In some cities, thick smoke could be seen rising into the sky, CNBC TV18 reported. Though tensions are still high in some areas of the nation, authorities launched security operations to regain control.

The Embassy of India in Mexico responded quickly, urging Indian nationals to remain indoors and exercise extreme caution. Indian citizens in Jalisco, including Guadalajara and Chapala, were specifically told to “shelter in place until further notice.” The advisory also covers parts of Tamaulipas (including Reynosa), Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo León.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy asked Indian nationals to stay indoors as much as possible, avoid areas where police or military operations are underway, and limit unnecessary travel. The embassy shared an emergency helpline number: +52 55 4847 7539.

US And Canada Also Warn Citizens

The United States Embassy and Consulates in Mexico issued a Travel Advisory Level 2, asking Americans to exercise increased caution due to risks such as crime, kidnapping and unrest. According to CNBC TV18 reports, the Canadian government also urged its citizens to exercise a high degree of caution. It also released updated safety guidance about violence and road blockages in certain regions.

The unrest has also affected air travel. Major airlines, including United Airlines, American Airlines and Air Canada, temporarily suspended flights to some affected destinations as a safety precaution, the news portal reported. Before leaving for the airport, passengers are advised to enquire directly with their airlines about any updates.

For the time being, foreign governments are advising their citizens to remain vigilant, stay informed through official updates, and refrain from unnecessary trips to affected areas.
