Travellers, this is for you! The government has now raised the duty-free allowance for passengers bringing imported goods into India. Earlier it was ₹50,000, but now the bar has been raised to ₹75,000. Apart from this, there are other rules related to jewellery, laptops and other items that you should know.
Duty-Free Allowance Raised In India
According to a report by The Times of India, the government has raised the duty-free allowance for passengers bringing imported goods to India. Under the newly notified Baggage Rules, 2026, the duty-free limit was earlier ₹50,000, but it has now been increased to ₹75,000. Under these new rules, a resident or a tourist of Indian origin arriving in India by air or sea will be able to take advantage of this benefit.
These new Baggage Rules are already in effect. This new system will also replace the decade-old baggage rules framework. Talking about foreign tourists, the duty-free limit has been increased to ₹25,000 from ₹15,000. The rules also specify duty-free jewellery limits for returning residents and Indian tourists who have lived abroad for more than one year.

Other Important Rules A Traveller Should Know
According to The Times of India, female passengers will be allowed duty-free clearance of jewellery up to 40 grams. On the other hand, the limit will be 20 grams for other passengers if carried in bona fide baggage. As per a report by NDTV, there are some other rules that travellers should know. One laptop is considered duty-free for each passenger aged 18 years or above.
Talking about pets, when brought along, they will also be included as duty-free under consolidated concessional provisions, subject to applicable animal rules. Crew members also have a ₹2,500 duty-free cap. Certain items, such as alcohol, tobacco products beyond the allowed limit, large electronic goods, and gold and silver in forms other than jewellery, will have separate conditions and limits.
