India To Get First Hydrogen-Powered Train Soon; Railways Approves Jind-Sonipat Route

India hydrogen-powered train

Indian Railways has been progressing a lot. And no, we’re not only talking about the high-speed trains launched to reduce travel time or the new routes being introduced. We’re also talking about the Railways’ move towards cleaner and greener transport systems. Indian Railways is now preparing to launch the country’s first hydrogen-powered train, and we’re excited to tell you all about it!

India To Get Its First Hydrogen-Powered Train Soon

The Indian Railways has given approval to the country’s first hydrogen-powered train. This upcoming train is planned to run between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. As per The Economic Times, it will operate under Northern Railway and will have 10 coaches. Officials said the train can reach a top speed of 75 kmph. Instead of using diesel, the train will run on hydrogen fuel cells, which marks a major step towards cleaner railway transport.

The hydrogen train will generate around 1,200 kilowatts of power. Railways will use Distributed Power Rolling Stock (DPRS) technology for the project. What does this mean? The train does not depend on a single engine or locomotive placed at the front. Instead, the power equipment is spread across different coaches of the train. This will help the train run more smoothly.

Train Services Will Not Begin Immediately

Though the train got approval, it will not begin immediately. Northern Railway still needs to complete several formalities and safety checks before the train starts running. Officials must submit compliance reports to different agencies, including RDSO, the Commissioner of Railway Safety, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), and international safety inspection agencies.

Indian Railways got approval to store and refill hydrogen gas for the train at Jind in Haryana. Since hydrogen is highly flammable, railway officials are focusing a lot on safety. The train has special systems like leak detectors and flame detectors that can identify gas leaks or fire risks. Officials said dust can stop these sensors from working properly, so workers will regularly clean and check them to make sure the train operates safely.

Indian Railways will specially train workers who will manage hydrogen filling stations and operate the train. Before starting work, staff members will receive certificates to confirm they understand how to safely handle the new hydrogen technology. For the first three months of operations, trained technical staff will travel onboard the train. These teams will handle any technical issues during the journey.
