India Passport

The latest Global Passport Index 2026 has been released, placing India at 125th globally. Unlike traditional passport rankings that mainly assess visa-free travel, the index measures a passport’s overall value by considering factors such as global mobility, investment opportunities, and quality of life. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest rankings.

India Placed 125th In Global Passport Index 2026

India has been ranked 125th in the fifth edition of the Global Passport Index (GPI), slipping one place from 124th in 2025. According to a report by Hindustan Times, over the past five years, however, the Indian passport has improved by two positions, rising from 127th in 2021.

The latest index ranks 197 countries based on a composite score that considers factors beyond visa-free travel, including global mobility, investment opportunities, and quality of life. India’s composite score reached a five-year high of 45.1, despite the slight drop in its overall ranking.

The ranking comes after the Indian passport also slipped in the latest Henley Passport Index, where it is placed around 80th. The Global Passport Index uses a broader methodology, resulting in a comparatively lower ranking for India.
