India Passport Slips 3 Ranks In Henley Index In May; Singapore Retains Top Spot

India’s passport has slipped three places in the latest Henley Passport Index. It was ranked 75th in February 2026, and the May edition shows a decline. However, the good news is that the Indian passport still provides access to 56 destinations without requiring a traditional visa in advance.

India Passport Slips To 78th Place

The Henley Passport Index is one of the most widely used global passport rankings. It evaluates 199 passports based on how many destinations their holders can access without obtaining a visa in advance. The rankings rely on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and consider three types of access: visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival, and electronic travel authorisation (ETA).

According to News18, India has slipped from 75th to 78th place in the May 2026 update. However, experts say this isn’t a major concern, as rankings often change due to shifting visa policies, bilateral agreements, and movements by other countries. In India’s case, the number of visa-friendly destinations remains the same, suggesting the drop is more about global reshuffling than reduced travel access.

Currently, Indian passport holders can access 56 destinations through easier entry routes. Of these, 30 allow visa-free travel, 23 offer visa-on-arrival, and three require an ETA.

Countries Leading The Henley Passport Index

Unsurprisingly, Singapore has retained its position as the world’s most powerful passport in the Henley Passport Index. Their citizens enjoy visa-free access to 192 destinations, the highest globally. The second spot is shared by Japan, South Korea, and United Arab Emirates, each with access to 187 destinations without a prior visa.

In third place, Sweden passport holders can visit 186 destinations visa-free. Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Switzerland share fourth place, with visa-free access to 185 destinations.

Finally, in fifth place, Austria, Greece, Malta, and Portugal are tied, each offering access to 184 destinations.
