Indian Railways will soon follow the footsteps of airports. It is all set to implement strict baggage rules and regulations for travellers. As per a report by the Times of India, passengers will be required to pass their luggage through electronic weighing machines, and permissible weight limits will be enforced. Passengers carrying baggage beyond the allowed limit will be subject to additional charges or penalties. Bulky baggage will also not be allowed, even if it falls under the weight limit.

Reportedly, Indian Railways is also planning to introduce premium single-brand outlets at redeveloped stations. These shops will sell apparel, footwear, electronics, travel gear and other items. The move is aimed at boosting passenger convenience while also increasing railway revenue. Just like at airports, passengers will be able to indulge in some retail therapy before departure.

Baggage Allowance By Class, Retail Stores & More

As per the same report, the permissible baggage limits will vary by class in trains. AC First Class passengers will be allowed up to 70 kg, AC Two Tier up to 50 kg, while AC Three Tier and Sleeper Class will be allowed to carry baggage up to 40 kg. General Class travellers will be restricted to 35 kg only.

Himanshu Shukla, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) of the Prayagraj division of NCR, told TOI that the move is aimed at making travel more efficient and comfortable. The initial rollout will cover major stations, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri and Etawah. Moreover, passengers will only be allowed access to their platforms once their baggage has been weighed and cleared.

Reportedly, Prayagraj Junction is also undergoing a massive redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme with an investment of ₹960 crore. The project will transform the station into a modern rail hub equipped with world-class amenities. These will include a spacious waiting lounge, high-speed Wi-Fi, solar energy systems, automated ticket vending machines and more.

Furthermore, from December 2026, access to the terminal will also require a valid train ticket that will function just like a “boarding pass”. Non-travellers accompanying family or friends will need a platform ticket, which will act as a “visitor pass”.
