Travellers, this one is for you. Indian Railways made an important announcement on Sunday. A new fare structure will come into effect from December 26, 2025. Authorities have increased travel fares for passengers travelling in select train categories. Here is everything you need to know about the revised ticket prices.

Indian Railways Announces Fare Revision For Select Train Categories

According to a report by The Economic Times, Indian Railways has announced a change in ticket fares for certain coaches. The revised structure, effective from December 26, is expected to generate additional revenue of around ₹600 crore. Under the new fare structure, passengers travelling on routes longer than 215 km will pay 1 paise extra per kilometre in ordinary class. For Mail and Express trains, both non-AC and AC classes will see a hike of 2 paise per kilometre.

There is no fare hike for passengers travelling on routes shorter than 215 km. Reportedly, a passenger travelling 500 km in a non-AC coach will now pay ₹10 extra for the journey. Indian Railways has also clarified that there is no increase in fares for suburban trains and monthly season tickets. This move aims to maintain affordability for low and middle-income families.

Category-Wise Ticket Prices

As per a report by The Economic Times, the previous fare hike announced by the Railway Ministry was successful and has generated nearly ₹700 crore in revenue so far. Here are the category-wise ticket prices: 

  • For suburban trains and monthly season tickets: No change in fare.
  • Ordinary class passengers travelling up to 215 km: No change in fare.
  • Ordinary class journeys beyond 215 km: Additional charge of 1 paise per km.
  • Mail/ Express Non-AC Class: Additional charge of 2 paise per km.
  • Mail/Express AC Class: Additional charge of 2 paise per km.
  • Non-AC 500 km journey: Additional charge of ₹10

Apart from revising ticket prices, Indian Railways has also planned the operation of special trains to manage extra rush during Christmas and New Year. A total of 244 additional trips have already been added, with more expected in the coming days.

Special trains are also being run on busy corridors connecting Delhi, Howrah, Lucknow, and nearby cities. These services are meant to support long-distance travellers heading home or travelling for the holiday season.
