Indian Railways To Roll Out Major Reservation Upgrade In 40 Yrs From Aug; Here’s What Will Change

Indian Railways Reservation System

Indian Railways is planning a big change after 40 years. They are now preparing to shift all train reservations to a new and upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS) from August. This move aims to make ticket booking smoother while also reducing technical problems faced by passengers. Here’s everything you need to know about this system.

Indian Railways Plans Upgrade For Reservation System

The reservation system by Indian Railways was first introduced in 1986. This means authorities are planning a major change for the first time in 40 years. The system has now been completely overhauled using upgraded technology with AI features and expanded capacity. Reportedly, a review meeting was held recently at Rail Bhavan, where Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw instructed officials to ensure that passengers do not face difficulties while transitioning from the old reservation system to the new one.

The reservation system has been upgraded several times over the years to handle the growing number of passengers booking train tickets across the country. However, this is the first time a major overhaul will be rolled out. Online railway ticket booking started in 2002, and today nearly 88% of all railway ticket bookings happen through online platforms.

RailOne App and AI-Based Upgrades

According to Times Now, Indian Railways has also increased the capacity of the reservation system using new and advanced technologies. One of the biggest recent updates is the launch of the RailOne app in 2025. The app uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict whether a waitlisted train ticket is likely to get confirmed. The accuracy of ticket confirmation predictions has improved from 53% to 94%.

Moreover, the RailOne app also offers several other services and features. Passengers can use it to book or cancel tickets, apply for refunds, buy platform and unreserved tickets, and check live train status, platform numbers, and train schedules. Customers can also use this app for passenger support and complaints.
