India’s Favourite Chicken Varieties On Top 20 List
TasteAtlas recently released its list of the ‘20 Best Chicken Dishes’ in the world, and India has made us proud once again. Among the country’s wide variety of flavourful non-veg dishes, Butter Chicken claimed the 5th spot on the list. Beating more than half of the chicken dishes from around the globe, it’s a proud moment for all Indians. Another dish that surprised us by being on the list is Tandoori Chicken, which stands in 14th position.
The story behind this iconic dish is just as delicious. Murgh Makhani, popularly known as Butter Chicken, was created in Delhi during the 1950s by Kundan Lal Gujral, who ran the famous restaurant Moti Mahal. One day, the cooks combined leftover chicken marinade with tomatoes and butter, then simmered the tandoor-cooked chicken in the mix. What started as an experiment soon became one of India’s most beloved dishes — a must-have on any Indian restaurant’s menu and now, a global favourite.
Tandoori Chicken is a staple of Indian cuisine and gets its name from the Persian word ‘tannur’, meaning ‘fire’. Marinated in yoghurt and spices, it’s traditionally cooked in a clay tandoor, giving it a smoky, succulent flavour. This dish is most famous in Punjab.
