Odisha Plans E-Hundi Facility For Jagannath Temple In Puri

Soon, you will be able to make online donations to the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, which is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, the idea was recently discussed at a meeting chaired by Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, after receiving donation requests from devotees in the country and abroad.

The Odisha government and the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) regularly receive requests from devotees to introduce online donation facilities for making offerings to this 12th-century shrine. Considering these requests, officials are now planning to introduce an ‘e-hundi’ mechanism, tentatively named ‘Samarpan’. A hundi at the Jagannath Temple is a traditional collection box. Devotees place cash in it as an offering to Lord Jagannath.

Though the idea is still in its initial stages, if it becomes a reality, it would make it easier for devotees to make donations from any part of India or even abroad. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, discussions were also held at the meeting to make these online donations tax-free. Officials also discussed spending the amount received on infrastructure and conservation of the temple.

However, the minister also directed authorities to ensure that online transactions to the temple are protected from any kind of cyber fraud. He also asked officials to put adequate measures in place so that all digital transactions remain secure and transparent.

The Jagannath Temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, who is worshipped alongside his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. The shrine attracts millions of devotees and tourists annually, especially during the annual Rath Yatra.
