Cabinet Approves Rameshwar-Paradeep Coastal Highway In Odisha
According to The Hindu, on Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved the construction of a new, 160-kilometre-long coastal highway from Rameshwar to Paradeep in Odisha. The approved project is worth a whopping ₹8,301 crore and will be constructed on a hybrid annuity model.
The highway will be developed in two phases. The 79.4-km stretch from Rameshwar to Konark, of which nearly 77 km will be built on a greenfield alignment, will be four-lane. Meanwhile, the 80.78-km Konark-to-Paradeep section will be a two-lane road with paved shoulders and will be developed entirely on a greenfield alignment. The capital cost of the two packages is estimated at ₹5,304.8 crore and ₹2,995.99 crore, respectively.
Designed for speeds of up to 100 kmph, the corridor is expected to improve connectivity and reduce travel time across the districts of Khurda, Puri, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur in Odisha.

Once completed, it is expected to cut travel time between Rameshwar and Paradeep by around two and a half hours. The reduced travel time is also likely to lower fuel consumption, carbon emissions, and vehicle operating costs.
Additionally, the project is expected to improve freight movement and passenger connectivity across Odisha’s coastal belt. According to the state government, the new corridor will boost regional mobility, support socio-economic development, and provide safer, faster, and seamless connectivity for both passengers and freight traffic.
