On Saturday, August 23, the outer wall of Amer Fort, a UNESCO Heritage Site in Rajasthan, collapsed amid heavy rainfall. The intense downpour caused a 200-foot-long section of the Rambagh wall, located in front of the Jwala Mata Temple, to break apart and crumble. Amer Fort Outer Wall Collapses
Amer Fort in Jaipur is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Rajasthan and often attracts many visitors. The fort, built in the 16th century, tells a lot about the Rajputs’ history and strong architectural intellect. Over the years, the fort has aged, and its once-strong walls have gradually weakened. As per the Economic Times, relentless rainfall has continued to lash Rajasthan, and Jaipur experienced heavy rains as well recently. Through tiny gaps and cracks, rainwater entered inside Amer Fort’s wall and loosened the grip of the stone. Within a short time, a large portion of the outer wall collapsed on Saturday.
Amer Palace Superintendent Dr. Rakesh Chholak mentioned that elephant rides are closed for now, keeping both the elephants’ and tourists’ safety in mind. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far, but it has been considered a major cultural damage. The authorities and locals are wondering how to preserve these historical heritage sites for a long time. Rajasthan faces sudden heavy rainfalls during the monsoon, making the conservation work difficult.
Rainfall Alert In Various Districts
The Economic Times has reported that intense rainfall has been putting extra pressure on historical monuments across Rajasthan. This also leads to a delay in restoration work, causing the strong foundations of these places to weaken and raising concerns of damage. The authorities have already begun to assess the damage caused by the rains and plan restoration.
This recent incident at the Amer Fort serves as a reminder to take care of historical monuments. Apart from Jaipur, many districts in Rajasthan faced heavy rainfall, including Kota, Bundi, Sawai, Madhopur, and Tonk. The weather department issued a red alert for heavy rainfall for Bhilwara and Chittorgarh, and a yellow alert for Bundi, Kota, Pali, Rajsamand, Udaipur, Dungarpur, Banswara, Jalore, and Sirohi.
