Karnataka May Soon Get Adventure Tourism Safety Guidelines; Here’s What We Know So Far

Karnataka is considered a major hub for adventure activities. From hiking and scuba diving to trekking and rock climbing, the state offers a wide range of activities for thrill seekers. But a recent incident in which a man was seriously injured after falling from a zipline has prompted the authorities to put some safety rules in place.

Safety Rules For Adventure Activities In Karnataka 

Recently, a 34-year-old man was seriously injured after he fell nearly 40 feet from a zipline in Dandeli after the cable snapped mid-ride. The incident sparked a serious discussion online about safety rules for adventure activities in Karnataka. According to The Times of India, stakeholders are also demanding that Karnataka should introduce comprehensive safety regulations.

Reportedly, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has been urged to classify adventure tourism properly and frame guidelines based on the terrain where these activities are conducted. Water sports at destinations such as Karwar, Gokarna and Kundapur are being conducted without safety regulations, and officials want this to change. Not just that, but in places like Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru, almost every homestay is offering activities like ziplining, cliff diving and more. Authorities believe that the lack of regulations has resulted in the rise of adventure experiences even at private facilities across Karnataka.

Officials Begin Drafting Adventure Tourism Guidelines

H Jagadeesh, Secretary of the Karnataka Tourism Society (KTS), said the government should introduce a basic set of safety rules to make these activities safe. According to The Times of India, there should also be trained personnel to supervise these activities. You would like to know that after the Dandeli incident, officials from the tourism department have begun drafting adventure tourism guidelines.

These new guidelines will cover safety standards, specify the types of activities suitable for different geographical locations and prescribe the minimum number of trained personnel required to operate these activities. The department will soon submit a proposal for these guidelines to the government.
