Karnataka’s Health and Family Welfare Minister UT Khader has stated that the sale of junk food will be banned in schools and hospitals across the state as part of efforts to promote healthier eating habits and tackle lifestyle-related diseases. Scroll down to know more.

Karnataka Bans Junk Food In Schools & Hospitals

Talking to The New Indian Express, UT Khader told the portal that the unhealthy food choices are contributing significantly to the rise in lifestyle diseases. He further proposed a complete ban on the sale of fast food in school settings and in hospital canteens.

The minister said that the process will act as a model for other government and private hospitals to follow, further stating that the initiative aims to encourage healthier food environments in public institutions.

State To Promote Stricter Food Safety

Khader also highlighted the need for stricter food safety guidelines and said the government plans to improve its food testing facilities. He noted that existing food testing laboratories will be improved, while a new laboratory will be established to ensure food products undergo proper quality and safety checks before they reach consumers.

With the monsoon season beginning, the minister also reviewed preparedness for vector-borne diseases such as malaria. He directed the District Health Officer to step up public awareness campaigns on disease prevention and instructed authorities to take strict action against property owners who allow water to stagnate on their premises, creating mosquito breeding grounds.

Karnataka has made major progress in managing malaria over the past few years. The state reported fewer than 1,000 malaria cases in 2021, indicating a major milestone in its disease control efforts.
