Karnataka Issues New Temple SOPs: CCTV, Digital Donations & New Hundi Rules Introduced

Karnataka has now issued comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for its temples. The new SOPs aim to safeguard temple donation boxes and prevent the misuse of cash, gold, silver and other valuable items offered at temples. Along with this, CCTV surveillance and digital donations are also being planned. Here’s what we know so far.

Karnataka Introduces New SOPs For Temples

In order to strengthen religious tourism and safeguard temple assets, the Karnataka government has issued comprehensive guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for temples. According to Deccan Herald, there will be a strict system in place to secure temple hundis. Four-way CCTV web cameras will monitor donation boxes, with feeds linked to district authorities and the police.

These cameras will be installed to prevent theft and the misuse of cash, gold, silver and other donations at temples. Moreover, temples in Karnataka have also been instructed to promote digital donations through UPI, BHIM and QR codes. Reportedly, hundi counting will also follow a fixed schedule under official supervision with complete video recording. And yes, only Home Guards, bank staff or government employees will be allowed to participate in hundi counting.

New Guidelines Aim To Improve Pilgrim Facilities

According to Deccan Herald, the new SOPs are also aimed at improving pilgrim amenities at temples. District administrations have been directed to develop district and inter-district temple circuits with improved road connectivity. There will also be accommodation, drinking water, sanitation facilities and shaded seating for devotees.

Furthermore, to ease congestion at the shrines, dedicated parking facilities will be created and managed through authorised agencies.
