Around 2,500 pilgrims were left stranded when a landslide forced the sudden closure of the road on the trek route to Kedarnath Temple in the Himalayas. As per a report by NDTV, the pilgrims were brought back safely to Sonprayag by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The landslide occurred on Wednesday, July 30. The update was shared on the official X account of Rudraprayag Police, Uttarakhand. They wrote, “The Kedarnath Dham travel route between Gaurikund and Sonprayag is currently disrupted. From yesterday until this morning, security forces have been facilitating the passage of pilgrims returning from Kedarnath Dham via alternative routes.”
Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Akshay Prahlad stated on X that around 50-70 metres of the road between Munkatiya and Gaurikund has been completely washed out due to continuous rainfall. Not only that, the alternative pedestrian route, which was being used, has also broken. The landslide caused a lot of debris to accumulate on the road.
