King Daksha organised a grand yagna (sacrifice) and invited all the gods and goddesses but excluded Lord Shiva and Sati. Despite this, Sati decided to attend the yagna and confront her father. However, she was met with disrespect and insults, and in a fit of rage, she jumped into the fire and ended her life.
Lord Shiva, upon hearing the news of Sati’s death, was filled with grief and rage. He picked up the body of Sati and began his Tandava dance, which threatened to destroy the world. To stop the destruction, Lord Vishnu cut the body of Sati into 51 pieces, and wherever a piece fell, a temple was built in her honour. One such temple is the Surkanda Devi Temple, built at the spot where Sati’s head is believed to have fallen.
