Kerala’s Sabarimala is among the world’s largest annual pilgrimage destinations, welcoming an estimated 10 to 15 million devotees every year. With such massive footfall, managing crowds efficiently is a major challenge. To enhance pilgrim safety, streamline movement, and improve crowd management, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) is planning to introduce an AI-based pilgrim management system at the temple. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
AI Crowd Management System At Sabarimala Temple
According to India Today, Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) President K. Jayakumar said that the board is planning to introduce an AI-based pilgrim management system at Sabarimala from mid-November. The initiative is expected to be rolled out ahead of the upcoming pilgrimage season and will initially be implemented in select critical areas.
The system will be launched on a pilot basis this year before being expanded in phases. As part of the preparation, the board has reportedly held discussions with AI companies from Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai to explore the use of advanced technology for managing the movement of the lakhs of devotees who visit the hill shrine each year.
The proposed system is expected to integrate high-resolution cameras, infrared sensors, drones, GPS mapping, and predictive analytics. These technologies will help track pilgrim movement in real time, detect potential congestion before it occurs, and enable temple authorities and police personnel to manage crowds more efficiently and safely.

Here’s All You Need To Know About It
According to reports, the primary goal of the AI-powered system is to detect crowd build-up before it reaches critical levels and provide real-time recommendations to regulate pilgrim movement and enhance safety at Sabarimala.
To achieve this, authorities plan to digitally map the entire pilgrimage route and integrate it with live camera feeds and sensor data. This will give officials a real-time overview of crowd movement, helping them identify potential bottlenecks and take preventive action before congestion occurs.
The system is also expected to generate operational alerts and recommendations in real time, enabling authorities to respond more effectively to situations such as sudden crowd surges, heavy rainfall, or lightning warnings.
