We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again — festivals are an integral part of Indian culture. While some are celebrated across the country on a grand scale, it’s the regional ones that truly showcase the nation’s diversity and beauty. One such unique and deeply rooted celebration is the Kheer Bhawani Mela in Kashmir.
What Is Kheer Bhawani Mela In Kashmir?
The annual Mata Kheer Bhawani Mela is celebrated at the revered Ragnya Devi Temple, also known as Kheer Bhawani Temple, in Kashmir on the occasion of Jyeshtha Ashtami. Thousands of Kashmiri Pandits flock to Tulmulla, which is about 30 km from Srinagar, to attend this celebration.
It is one of the most significant religious occasions for Kashmiri Pandits and has long stood as a symbol of communal unity in the Valley. According to Deccan Chronicle, the temple, located beside a sacred spring believed to change colours on auspicious days, becomes the focal point of devotion during the festival.
During the puja, devotees offer kheer (rice pudding), milk, flowers, sugar candy, raisins, ghee, and aromatic leaves to Mata Ragnya Devi. More than just a ritual, the mela represents faith, resilience, cultural reconnection, and harmony, and is often seen as a moment of “homecoming” for Kashmiri Pandits who travel from across the country to take part.

Here’s All You Need To Know About These Festivities
The Kheer Bhawani Mela is considered one of the largest Hindu gatherings in Kashmir after the Amarnath Yatra. It is dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi, believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. During the festival, devotees often walk barefoot to the temple and offer milk, flowers, and kheer to the sacred spring within the shrine complex.
Beyond its religious importance, the mela is also widely seen as a powerful symbol of cultural harmony and brotherhood in the Valley. Local Kashmiri Muslims have historically participated in the arrangements, welcoming pilgrims and setting up stalls to support the event, reflecting a spirit of cooperation, coexistence, and shared cultural heritage.
