The decision was announced by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to provide legal protection to the rich archaeological, historical and cultural heritage of the Union Territory. According to the official X account of the LG of Ladakh, this is being considered a landmark decision to safeguard Ladakh’s cultural and spiritual heritage. With this decision, invaluable treasures, including ancient petroglyphs, rock carvings, centuries-old forts, caves and iconic gompas, will now be preserved.
These sites have been degraded for decades but will now receive statutory protection, along with systematic conservation and restoration. According to the LG of Ladakh, the move will also prevent encroachments, regulate activities and preserve the Union Territory’s rich civilisational identity.
