Meghalaya’s Sohra, also known as Cherrapunji, looks stunning with its waterfalls and lush greenery. However, its natural beauty is now being ruined by an increase in the amount of non-biodegradable waste that are carelessly thrown at public places. Meghalaya’s Sohra Takes Strict Actions To Safeguard Nature
Meghalaya’s Sohra is known for its natural beauty, but irresponsible tourism is causing harm to this place. To avoid this, the authorities have recently announced a series of new rules. As per a Tour and Travel World report, picnicking, open-air cooking, and roadside dining have been strictly prohibited at Mawkdok-Sohra Road and surrounding tourist locations. Apart from this, visitors are also prohibited from parking their vehicles in these areas. Furthermore, the consumption of alcohol and serving of food without permission from the local village dorbar are strictly banned.

The deputy chief of Ka Hima Sohra, Maremdor Syiem, has said that both locals and tourists are responsible for causing significant damage to roads, tourist spots, and famous view points. The authorities added that vehicles entering Meghalaya’s Sohra will now have to carry a bag to collect waste or keep a dustbin inside the vehicle. They have also declared that not following these rules will result in strict punishments.
Speaking on this matter, Marembor Syeim has said that camping rules in the area are now strict. Night camping will be allowed at approved places. Apart from that, it is not allowed anywhere else unless it’s arranged by certified groups.
Key Regulations For Content Creators
On social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and more, we often come across lesser-known places shared by creators, which lead to an unregulated rise in tourism. Taking strict action against this, Rural Tourism Forum President Alan West has said that vloggers, YouTubers, and media persons can no longer disclose Meghalaya’s lesser-known places. They’ll have to take prior permission from Ka Hima Sohra’s Tourism Committee. This action is not taken to reduce tourism, but to encourage responsible behaviour among travellers.
Stating the reason behind these rules, the authorities said that without immediate action, the natural beauty and cultural significance of the place could be lost.
