A video from the steps leading to Mount Girnar in Gujarat has now sparked a heated debate online. The clip, posted by an X user, @siva17subraman, shows four men carrying a pilgrim in a traditional palki on their shoulders. People are now asking everyone to stop the practice of humans carrying other humans. They are saying that it is not fair and is also quite demeaning.
You should know that the palki, or palanquin, is a service that has been going on for generations at many pilgrimage sites across India. Since the walk to the temple or shrine situated at top is considered quite difficult, many pilgrims opt for a palki, which is a small carriage held on poles. Four local workers usually carry this carriage on their shoulders.

The Internet Is Divided Over The Traditional Practice
Notably, this service is mostly used by elderly or sick pilgrims who find it difficult to reach the top by walking. But yes, many pilgrims also opt for the service for convenience. You can see in the video that the porters are using sticks to support themselves while a pilgrim is seated on the palki comfortably.
The video has divided the internet. Many users have expressed that this service should be stopped. Some users also stated that the porters are paid for their service and that it is a crucial source of livelihood for many locals. One user wrote, “This is why the government should bring in rules.” Another commented, “This slavery system should be abolished.” Some users even suggested that this service should be used only by people with medical problems.
