A technical breakdown on a Mumbai AC local train left travellers gasping for air during Monday morning’s peak hour after the air-conditioning system failed to continue working while the train was halted at Mulund station. The incident resulted in one passenger being hospitalised. Scroll down to know more.

Mumbai Local AC System Fails At Mulund Station

As per a report by the Indian Express, the issue happened around 9.26 am on the 8.33 am Titwala-CSMT AC local, which had halted at Platform 2 of Mulund station when its cooling system suddenly stopped working. The AC remained non-functional for nearly 15 minutes, which caused the temperature inside the crowded coaches to rise quickly.

Unlike typical suburban trains, AC local trains have automatic doors that remain locked during operation and cannot be opened manually by passengers. With the air-conditioning system out of service, airflow inside the coaches was severely affected, leaving several travellers struggling to breathe. According to railway officers, three passengers complained of breathing difficulties and required immediate medical attention. One of them, Fahim Ansari, was taken to a nearby hospital for medical care, while the other two recovered and continued their journey.

Viral Video Shows Authorities

Videos circulating on social media portrayed railway staff and fellow passengers helping those who felt unwell after the train reached the platform. Railway officials said the affected rake was removed from service after reaching Kurla station and later sent to the workshop for repairs. Following the air-conditioning breakdown, two scheduled services operated by the same rake were cancelled.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the reliability of Mumbai’s AC suburban train services, specifically during peak hours when travellers depend entirely on the cooling system for ventilation inside sealed coaches.

A similar incident had occurred back in 2018 on a Borivali-Churchgate AC local, when an air-conditioning failure caused severe discomfort and complaints of suffocation among commuters. At the time, Western Railway had attributed the problem to a technical fault and repaired the rake. As per the news reports, Railway authorities have stated that the exact cause of Monday’s malfunction is under investigation.
