There’s no denying that Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) often sees huge passenger traffic. To ensure travellers’ safety, the airport recently conducted a high-intensity emergency drill to test its readiness for emergency fire-related incidents. Keep reading for more details.
Emergency Fire Drill At Mumbai Airport
To make sure the airport is ready to deal with a fire incident, an emergency fire drill was conducted at CSMIA. For this activity, a dummy aircraft was set on fire for a real emergency situation. According to a report by Mid-Day, with the drill, the airport officials aimed to check the response time, coordination, and readiness of various airport departments. Fire engines, security personnel, medical teams, and ground staff all actively took part in this activity.
The drill also included a real-time scenario where the Indian Air Force (IAF) airlifted dummy passengers from the aircraft. Such exercises help the airport ensure that all teams are ready to handle unexpected emergencies while maintaining strict safety standards.

Regular Runway Maintenance
Just before the fire drill, CSMIA carried out its regular runway maintenance. On November 20, both runways were closed for around six hours to perform post-monsoon checking. This activity involved repairing the runway surface, checking technical systems, and inspecting lighting, markings, and drainage. With these steps, airport officials ensure that the runways remain safe and fully functional for both domestic and international flights.
The CSMIA also achieved a major milestone in air traffic. According to The Free Press Journal, the airport handled 1,036 flights, breaking its previous record of 1,032 flights from November 2023. Out of these, 755 were domestic, and 281 were international flights. Around 520 planes arrived while 516 departed. The airport’s Air Traffic Control team played a crucial role in managing this busy schedule efficiently.
These actions show that CSMIA takes both passenger safety and smooth operations very seriously. By running emergency drills and managing record levels of air traffic, the airport is setting high standards for the aviation industry in India.
