For Mumbaikars, local trains are more than just a mode of transport—they’re a space to meet people, share stories, and add a little colour to daily life. To make commuting even easier, the official Mumbai local train app, Yatri, has introduced a real-time chat feature called Yatri Chat. Scroll down to know more.
Real-Time Chat Feature On Yatri App For Mumbai Locals
The new real-time chat feature known as Yatri Chat provides in-app alerts and announcements from Indian Railways, but this new tool takes commuter communication one step further. Designed to keep Mumbai’s 8 million daily commuters updated, connected, and informed throughout their journey, reported Mid-Day.
The chat feature offers separate community groups for each major railway corridor—Western, Central, Harbour and Trans-Harbour. This keeps conversations relevant, as commuters can join the chat for the line they use every day. Instead of scattered information from random sources, travellers can now see updates specific to their route.

More About This New Feature
With Yatri Chat, passengers can share real-time on-ground updates, ask questions, respond to others, and help fellow commuters. The new reply option makes the communication two-way and interactive. Whether it’s about a delayed train, a crowded platform, a technical fault or a small everyday observation, users can now exchange information instantly on the app.
While talking to Mid-Day, Reeva Sakaria, Yatri’s co-founder, said that Mumbai’s local trains have always been a place where people bond and connect. Many regular travellers form “train groups” and “train friendships,” a unique part of Mumbai’s culture. According to her, Yatri Chat brings this familiar community feeling into the digital space.
But how is it different from WhatsApp groups? Sakaria explained that WhatsApp limits group size and often mixes conversations from many places. Yatri Chat, on the other hand, keeps discussions line-specific. This ensures that commuters get the most useful information without unnecessary messages. It also avoids the chaos of multiple unrelated chats.
