Mumbai Metro 3, also known as the city’s Aqua Line, has been making headlines ever since it became fully operational this month. It is Mumbai’s first fully underground metro line, designed with advanced technology and offering faster travel. But recently, a commuter took to social media to compare its ticket prices with Mumbai’s local trains, and the post quickly caught everyone’s attention.

Comparing the fares of Mumbai’s newly launched Metro 3 (Aqua Line) with the Mumbai Local, often called the city’s lifeline, wasn’t on anyone’s bingo card. But a Mumbai commuter, Zoru Bhathena, did just that. He took to X (@zoru75) to share the cost difference between these two trains.
According to his post, Zoru Bhathena travels between Andheri and Churchgate for 25 days a month. He shared that a monthly pass for the AC local train costs ₹1,335, while the same commute on the new Mumbai Metro 3 costs around ₹3,500. Along with his post, he shared ticket screenshots and videos that showed the difference; the local train was jam-packed with people squeezed together, while in Metro 3, passengers were comfortably seated.
Internet Reacts To The Stark Price Difference
The post quickly went viral, attracting mixed reactions from netizens. One user commented, “First has a monthly pass, which is peanuts. Second has a daily ticket, which most can’t afford.” Another wrote, “So Very SHOCKING.” One X user wrote, “Difference in comfort will also call difference in costs.”
Some also pointed out that AC locals are less frequent than metro trains, which leads to crowding during peak hours. Others also commented that many passengers travel without tickets in local trains, especially during rush hours, since they lack ticket-checking systems, unlike the metro.
Despite the price gap, several users agreed that Mumbai Metro 3 has made daily travel faster and more comfortable. While Mumbai locals remain the cheaper option, not everyone enjoys travelling in a jam-packed train, right?
