Hilton’s report highlights that skip-generation (skip-gen) travel is becoming very popular in India. Skip-gen trips mean grandchildren and grandparents travelling together, bonding that too without parents. Nearly 8 in 10 families (79%) say they’ve taken or are planning a skip-gen holiday, compared to 60% across Asia Pacific. In fact, almost half, 43% of Indian families have done this in the past year alone, showing it’s no longer unusual but a mainstream way to travel.

For Indian families, skip-gen trips are all about making memories. Over two-thirds say the main goal is to create special moments between grandparents and grandchildren – the highest in the Asia Pacific. About 65% believe it helps strengthen family bonds, 53% enjoy unique experiences, and 47% pass on culture and traditions.

Skip-gen holidays aren’t just fun – they also boost grandparents’ wellbeing. Almost all (96%) respondents in India feel that travelling with family improves grandparents’ health, and quality time with grandchildren is the most valued part (51%). Hotels with wellness amenities, senior-friendly services, and accessible dining are becoming more important so older family members can travel comfortably.

Spending time together is now more important than just relaxing. While 56% of global travellers say resting is their main goal, 72% of families in India say quality time with family matters more than downtime. Popular activities include visiting historical and cultural landmarks (67%) and trying local food (66%), showing that families want trips that are fun, meaningful, and memorable.

It’s not just skip-gen travel – multi-generational trips are also on the rise. Around two-thirds (65%) of Indian families take holidays with three or more generations at least once a year. These trips help build stronger bonds and create memories that everyone will cherish.
