People love to travel, and the way they do it keeps changing. Now, South Indians are switching things up too! Scoot, the low-cost airline under Singapore Airlines, recently released its “South India Travel Insights 2025.” The report shows how travellers are now exploring unique and lesser-known destinations. How Are South Indians Travelling?
The study was conducted by YouGov with about 1,600 respondents from Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Visakhapatnam. As per the report, found that more than half of South Indian travellers are showing interest in lesser-known places.
And the surprising part is that 89% of them are planning to visit such places next year. Over the last three years, 45% of travellers have been interested in travelling to unconventional locations. When picking a destination, South Indian travellers are looking for factors like 46% go for budget-friendly options, 43% want less crowded spots, 38% care about easy visas, another 38% hunt for affordable flights, and 37% just want flights that actually fit their schedule. Popular emerging destinations include Krabi and Chiang Rai in Thailand, as well as Darwin in Australia.

Solo Travel On Rise
Solo travel is getting super popular, too! About 74% of South Indian travellers say they’re planning to take an international trip on their own in 2026. 51% are taking trips to lesser-known destinations, 49% are sticking to familiar tourist favourites. But why are they travelling? 26% responds they want to enjoy sightseeing, 23% showed interest in adventure holidays, and 19% are visiting friends or family.
Now, travellers have made technology their new travel buddy! Over half of travellers (53%) turn to social media for inspo, while 45% check out online reviews before deciding. And these days, 28% are even using AI tools like ChatGPT to plan their trips.
How much are people spending on their trip? On average, an international trip lasts about 7.6 days, and most people spend between Rs. 1–3 Lakhs, with the typical budget landing around Rs. 2.34 Lakhs. Scoot makes it even easier with promotions and low fares, starting at just Rs. 5,800 from Chennai and Rs. 7,800 from Amritsar.
