In a gravely unfortunate incident, a passenger train collided with a goods train in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, on November 4, Tuesday. This accident happened at around 4 pm at Bilaspur railway station. Many passengers were trapped beneath the train as the rescue team hurried to the spot. Unfortunately, as per the latest updates, 11 passengers have passed away while 20 are undergoing treatment for their injuries.
Bilaspur Train Collision Victims Offered ₹5 Lakh Ex Gratia
The Bilaspur train derailment incident took place on Tuesday, when a goods train and a local Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train collided. The injured passengers are currently receiving treatment under the care of professional doctors. As per a report by Business Standard, the railway authorities are in continuous contact with hospitals to ensure the injured people receive timely assistance. Senior railway officials are closely monitoring this situation.
As per a report by Business Line, Sanjay Agrawal, Bilaspur District Collector (DC), stated that the incident happened when a goods train and the first and last bogies of a local train met with an accident. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has offered ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured for their treatment. Agrawal had also mentioned earlier that four people were trapped inside the wreckage soon after the accident. Efforts were taken by the rescue team to evacuate them.

Signal Failure Touted As Reason
It so happened that the Korba-Bilaspur passenger train collided with the rear of a freight train that was parked on the same track. Railway sources revealed to Deccan Chronicle that a signal failure could have been the reason behind this. The impact of the trains ramming into each other was so severe that the passenger train’s engine went atop the freight train. Passengers were instantly trapped, and coaches were derailed and mangled. Gas cutters were used to evacuate the trapped passengers.

While an enquiry is currently undergoing to map out the reasons behind the Bilaspur train accident, 20 passengers were undergoing treatment for their severe injuries. It’s a matter of grave concern that 11 people lost their lives.
