Loud Noise Rules In Mumbai
In Mumbai, the use of loudspeakers is strictly regulated to control noise pollution. Loudspeakers must be box-type and no larger than 15×10 inches, with a maximum capacity of 3.5 watts. Noise limits vary by area: residential zones allow 45 dB(A) at night, commercial zones 55 dB(A), and industrial zones 70 dB(A). Silence zones, like hospitals, schools, and religious places, have stricter limits. Loudspeakers cannot be used at night without proper permission.
Anyone applying for a loudspeaker license must pay a fee, depending on the duration, and follow strict rules. The police can revoke licenses if the terms are violated. Legal action under the Mumbai Police Act or the Environment Protection Act may follow for breaches, with penalties up to five years’ imprisonment or a fine of ₹1 lakh. Compliance with Bombay High Court directions on noise pollution is mandatory.
