According to The New Indian Express, the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) — Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) has developed two new varieties of India’s favourite fruit—jamun. They will soon register and patent these varieties. On the other side, a farmer from Bengaluru, NC Patel, has developed three new jamum varieties on his land.

The principal scientist at ICAR-IIHR, Dr. G. Karunakaran, has stated that one of the new jamun varieties is known as Jamun Nerantara. This variety came into notice at a farm near Pavagada. As there is only one tree each producing these jamun varieties, it’s legally protected under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPVFRA).

However, the other variety by IIHR is still unnamed and is temporarily called IIHR-JI. This unique jamun is big and weighs over  23–24 grams. As per scientists, it is the largest jamun variety and also less astringent in taste.
