The Donald Trump administration in the US has paused or rescheduled visa appointments at American embassies and consulates worldwide as part of a broader immigration crackdown during his second term. US Pauses Visa Interviews Worldwide
According to reports by NDTV, the training is intended to help officers identify applicants who may become dependent on US public benefits and ensure that visa applications are assessed “comprehensively and consistently”. However, officials have not provided a specific timeline for when the appointment changes will end. The development was first reported by the Financial Times, which said some immigrant visa applicants with scheduled interviews had received emails informing them that their appointments were being postponed. Applicants were told they would be notified about new interview dates at a later stage.
The visa appointment changes come during a wider immigration crackdown under Trump, which has included deportations, visa and green card revocations and tighter scrutiny of applicants. The administration has also faced criticism over decisions linked to applicants’ political views and participation in pro-Palestinian protests.

How Will It Impact Indian Professionals?
Earlier this week, the Trump administration began reviewing a proposal that could significantly overhaul the H-1B visa programme, an important employment route for thousands of Indian professionals. The proposal has been classified as economically significant, meaning it could have an annual economic impact of at least $100 million (₹9,527 crore) or materially affect jobs, productivity, competition or a major economic sector.
The administration is also planning to revoke the visas of around 200,000 foreign nationals who entered the US for tourism or business but later applied for asylum to extend their stay. The officials have defended the broader immigration crackdown as a measure aimed at strengthening domestic security, although several policies have faced legal challenges. Last week, a US judge struck down an administration policy that had suspended immigrant visa issuance to applicants from 75 countries, ruling that the move exceeded Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statutory authority.
