Mumbai Police has launched “Buddy Cop Squads”. This initiative has been launched for women who return home late at night or work graveyard shifts. As per Mid-Day, through WhatsApp, they can directly connect with the local police and get quick help whenever they feel unsafe. With this step, Mumbai Police wants to make women feel safer and strengthen their security across the city.
As part of this initiative, every police station in Mumbai will have a Buddy Cop Squad with eight to 10 police officers, including women officers. If a woman feels unsafe while travelling home at night, she can quickly reach out to this team for help.

More About This Initiative
This initiative got approval in May and was finally launched in June. Mid-Day reported that senior police officials have asked all police stations to spread awareness so that more women know about the service and can use it whenever needed. Under this initiative, every police station will create a WhatsApp group for women in its area.
If any woman feels unsafe, she can send a message, share her live location, and ask for assistance. As these groups will be monitored 24×7, the nearest police team will respond quickly. Women can also continue to use the emergency helpline 112 for immediate police assistance. Moreover, the new teams will work alongside the existing Nirbhaya Squads.
