Ladakh Is Hosting The World’s Highest Art Biennale
The world’s highest art biennale in Ladakh is all set to begin from August 1 and continue till August 10, 2026. This large-scale art festival is going to be very different from regular art exhibitions. Instead of being held inside indoor galleries, it will spread across eight locations along the Leh-Kargil corridor. As per NDTV, the festival will cover places including Leh, Kargil, Mulbekh, Heniskot, Lamayuru, Nurla, Likir and Basgo.
The 2026 edition will feature both local and international artists. Ladakhi artists like Tundup Dorjay, Chemat Dorjey, Stanzin Samphel and Urgain Zawa will participate alongside well-known international names, including Jitish Kallat, Anna Jermolaewa and Swiss artist duo Studio Eidola.
The event is being planned by Vishal K Dar, while Tsering Motup Siddho is helping manage and organise the biennale. At this event, you won’t just get to explore art exhibitions, but also attend workshops, artist residencies and community-led programmes.

When Was The Biennale Founded?
The biennale was founded in 2023, and the word sā means soil in Ladakhi. Since the beginning, the event has focused on conversations around art, sustainability, climate change and local communities. As per NDTV, this year’s theme is Signals from Another Star.
The theme talks about important things like memories, learning, nature healing and caring more about the environment. It also highlights serious issues Ladakh is facing today, like melting glaciers, changing weather and the growing impact of tourism.
