Delhi auto fare

Delhi, get ready to pay more for your auto-rickshaw and taxi rides soon. CNG prices in the city were recently increased by ₹2 per kg, taking the rates close to ₹80 per kg. This price hike could increase travel fares and impact people who heavily depend on these modes of transport to commute in the city. Here’s what we know about this latest update.

Auto & Taxi Unions In Delhi Demand Fare Hike

After the latest increase in CNG prices, the Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh and Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union have urged the Delhi government to increase auto and taxi fares, citing rising operational costs. This means the CNG price hike could directly impact commuters who often travel by auto-rickshaws and taxis in the city.

According to Zee Business, the rise in fuel prices, along with costs of tyres, engines, and other spare parts, has made it difficult for many auto and taxi drivers to sustain their livelihoods. This is why they are demanding a fare hike. Reportedly, the unions have asked for the minimum fare for auto-rickshaws to be increased from ₹30 to ₹50 for the first 1.5 kilometres.

The unions have also sought an increase in the per-kilometre charge after the minimum distance from ₹11 to ₹15. Plus, they are proposing a waiting charge of ₹1 per minute and an extra luggage charge of ₹25.

Taxi Fare Might Also Increase

According to Zee Business, for taxis, the unions have demanded that the minimum fare for the first kilometre be increased from ₹40 to ₹70. They have also asked for revised per-kilometre charges for non-AC taxis from ₹17 to ₹30 and for AC taxis from ₹24 to ₹40. You should know that both autos and taxis are a significant part of Delhi’s public transport system.

Many Metro commuters rely on them for last-mile connectivity, travelling to markets, offices, and more. Lakhs of Delhiites could be impacted if the fare hike gets approved by the government. The unions have also pointed out that new fares could help reduce arguments between passengers and drivers. Such disputes are quite common in the city.
