Over 3,000 Bengaluru Auto Drivers Booked For Overcharging & Ride Refusal

In many cities, including Mumbai and Bengaluru, people rely on autorickshaws for local travel. However, in Bengaluru, the situation has become tense as many passengers have reported repeated issues with auto drivers overcharging and refusing rides. Here’s what happened!

Overcharging Complaints Against Bengaluru Auto Drivers

Bengaluru Traffic Police has been receiving a lot of complaints from passengers about autorickshaw drivers. Over the past three months, nearly 2,988 cases have been filed against them for violating fare rules and refusing rides. The police have now decided to take action as many commuters reported being overcharged or denied service, especially during peak and evening hours.

As per News18, of the total cases, 1,354 involved drivers charging higher fares than permitted. Another 1,634 cases involved drivers refusing to take passengers or rejecting specific destinations. Many commuters said drivers would either straightforwardly deny rides or ask for double fares. Police also noticed that auto drivers often target passengers who were not familiar with the local language.

What Are The Autorickshaw Transport Rules In Bengaluru?

As per transport rules, autorickshaw drivers are allowed to charge one-and-a-half times the meter fare only after 10 PM. New18 reported that some drivers are violating this rule and charging extra after 8 PM. So, now the police have taken matters into their own hands.

In response, traffic police have increased checking in important parts of the city. Teams are monitoring busy markets, railway stations, bus stops, and major IT areas where complaints are often received. Officials said those auto drivers who are violating fare rules are being fined under the Motor Vehicles Act.

However, not all autorickshaw drivers support this action of violating rules. Many drivers said that only a small group is responsible for such behaviour, and it harms the reputation of the entire community.
