Sparsh Darshan To Stop At Shree Maha Ganapati Temple In Gokarna
The Shree Maha Ganapati Temple in Gokarna, Karnataka, is famous because it is believed that visitors must pray here first before visiting the nearby Mahabaleshwar Temple. The temple has a standing idol of Lord Ganesha and is known for its Sparsh Darshan, a centuries-old tradition. People visiting the temple could touch the deity while offering prayers. But according to The New Indian Express, this practice will not continue now.
The ancient stone idol is reportedly getting damaged, and there are visible signs of erosion, especially on the hands, shoulders and chest. The damage is believed to be due to constant physical touch by devotees over the years. The decision to stop this tradition was taken jointly by the Muzrai Department and the temple priests.

The Ancient Idol Is Showing Signs Of Erosion
The Maha Ganapati Temple is one of Gokarna’s biggest attractions. The Lord Ganesha idol here has drawn devotees from across the world. Many people believe that touching the ancient idol fulfils their prayers, removes hardships and brings blessings. According to The New Indian Express, the temple authorities were concerned about the idol’s deterioration. This prompted them to hold a meeting and take the decision to discontinue Sparsh Darshan.
This means that if you visit the temple now, you will not be allowed to touch the idol. You can still offer your prayers and pay your respects from a distance. The restriction will remain in place until further orders.
