The footballer, who has spent numerous successful seasons playing in India, has a large image of Lord Shiva inked across his back along with the sacred Mahamrityunjaya mantra. For many fans, the tattoo brings up one obvious question: why would a footballer from Slovenia choose one of Hinduism’s most sacred deities as a permanent part of his life? According to a report by ETimes, the footballer stated that the solution lies in a deeply personal spiritual journey that began with a novel and grew through unexpected events in India that eventually changed his perspective on life.

The footballer has never described the tattoo as a trendy fashion statement. Instead, for him, the tattoo represents a spiritual bond that formed over time while living and playing in India.

Speaking in an interview with the Indian Super League, Luka Majcen revealed that his interest in Indian spirituality started after reading the bestselling novel Shantaram. He further stated that the book introduced him to ideas that remained with him long after he had finished reading it. What originally started as curiosity gradually developed into a much deeper interest in Indian philosophy and spirituality.

Luka Majcen’s Teammate’s Mother Introduced Him To Rudra

Luka Majcen also revealed in the interview that one unexpected incident enhanced that connection even further. He recalled that a teammate’s mother had performed a pooja and later told him that the name Rudra had come to her mind. Curious about its meaning, he searched for the name online, and he got to know that it is one of Lord Shiva’s angry avatars.

He admitted that discovering the meaning of Rudra had a significant effect on him and motivated him to explore mindfulness and meditation more seriously. Looking back on his journey, Luka Majcen recognised India as changing his outlook on life. The Slovenian striker also revealed that his years in India reshaped him in ways he never expected when he first arrived to play football in the country.
